I spent two summers writing my 346 page memoir “Low Budget Hell: Making Underground Movies with John Waters.” Many people said it was a good, if niche topic. That was OK with me. I enjoyed writing it, and if it wasn’t a bestseller, I wouldn’t be disappointed. I had a good day job that I didn’t quit despite all my friends assurances I would become a millionaire author. An encouraging selling point was that it was an insider’s view of many celebrities, from Divine to Andy Warhol, to Martin Landau and Ricky Lake. I was a producer on the original “Hairspray” movie, among many other low-budget wonders, so I had at least some credibility in the field.
