I grew up in the Baltimore suburb of Towson. It would be almost anonymous, if it hadn’t also been the town where John Waters and Divine grew up.

It had tree-lined streets, schools that I walked to, play grounds, and woods and fields close by. There was a little strip of drug stores, a deli, bowling alley, hobby shop, pizza shop, and soda fountains/lunch counters. You could take a trolley car to Baltimore’s…
